Permanent resident, tourist, constant habitue, transient traveller, adventurous wanderer… whatever one’s relationship with Patmos is, one thing is certain: That he has left a part of himself in it. The feeling of exultation and wonder is something that is shared by all those who step on the Patmian land, like a common secret that they agree to keep safe forever.
A small diamond in the rough in the Aegean, a sacred place ready to seduce any visitor. Scholars, intellectuals, researchers, artists, bachelors, families and couples: All fall in love with a different aspect of Patmos.
What they are all fascinated by – and we do not blame them – is its seas. Those magical beaches with the endless seabed and the natural beauty that ends up looking unreal.
The mystical atmosphere of the island is also “reflected” in its deep blue, crystal clear waters, making the identification of the most beautiful beaches a truly difficult task.
However, we attempted to list our favorites, as revealed to us by “The Island of Revelation”.
Agrio Livadi came to chase away the “tame”
Agrio Livadi, or as the locals call it Agriolivado, is a lovely sandy beach that literally caters to all tastes. For those who prefer organized beaches, it has sunbeds on the right side, a food shop and a beach bar.
The left section has large tamarisk trees, while both the right and left side have lovely clear waters and amazing golden sandy beaches. It is the first beach you meet when going from Skala to Kampos, on the right hand side. To many, it reminds many people of a classic Cycladic beach, so if you are a fan of Cycladic nature, Agrio Livadi will blow you away. If you are not, you will still be blown away.
Ligginou or Didymes
The spectacle created by the Twins is truly made to frame a romantic movie with a dramatic time period in the 70s. So retro, so idyllic, such natural beauty that it is unfair not to be honoured as it deserves. As their name suggests, the beaches are side by side on two identical coves of almost identical size.
The views from above are literally breathtaking, and you can get there from a dirt road with a bit of walking. With little usually crowded, they have fine pebbles and lovely water.
Vagia respects the lonely
Those who love quiet, isolation from the “noise” and time for introspection will find their place to be in Vagia. It’s a quiet beach in a small cove that will allow you to mindlessly listen to the mystical aura of the island. It is located in the northeastern part of Patmos, 7 kilometers from Skala and stands out for its cool crystal clear waters. There is one of the most famous shops of the island, where many people rush to eat the popular local delicacies for breakfast.
Geranos impresses without much of anything
Geranos or Livadi of Geranos or Delipothitos, is one of the first preferences of foreign tourists. The reason why it is so famous without even being organized will be revealed to you as soon as you face its waters. Quiet, remote from Skala, it claims your attention in its own way. With its cute colorful pebbles, with its natural wild beauty, with its tamarisk trees that ensure the coolest shade.
What elevates the idyllic setting combined with its crystal clear waters is the view of the small island of Ai-Giorgis, opposite. There is also the famous church, which you can reach by swimming from Geranos. Furthermore, the bay is bounded by small islands, reminiscent of Norwegian fjords.
Grikos the famous
The beauty of the Grikos is enough to seduce everyone. It even fooled the International Organization “The most beautiful bays in the world”, which included it in the program of the most beautiful bays in the world.
As you can understand, it is an omission to visit Patmos and leave without having swum in its waters, without having lain on its fine pebbles and sand. You may even feel for a while that you are in a lake, thanks to the two small peninsulas that surround it. Its admittedly cosmopolitan air is due to the fact that it is an anchorage for sailing ships.
In Grikos, which is about 4.5km from Skala, you will also find sunbeds but you should hurry up before the incredible view of the “Petra of Kalikatsous” takes your breath away.
On the southern extension of the Gulf of Grikos is the unique Petra. It is the ideal choice for those who prefer organized beaches. As if designed by the hand of a gifted artist, it will win you over immediately with its clear waters and the pink pebbles that adorn its shore. Equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas and a canteen, it is definitely a must-destination for families.
In Kampos the underwater heart of Patmos “beats”
In the northeastern part of the island lies Kampos and – contrary to its name – it is a wonderful beach. In fact, it is the most organized and busiest beach of Patmos – where everyone has a rendezvous.
With small pebbles and sand, it seduces everyone with its crystal clear waters and is the perfect choice for those who love water sports. But it is also an ideal choice for the endlessly social, as it has very nice shops, tavernas and bars.
Psili Ammos is not joking
Psili Ammos is here to stay and should claim a place on your list of favourite beaches. It is by far the most beautiful beach on the island, which could be used as a description of what paradise is like. So this heaven on earth is drenched in turquoise waters and filled with golden fine sand.
Its exotic beauty is one that would inspire a poet to complete his most important collection or an actor to give the most important performance of his career. And as befits any paradise, it is a beach that is inaccessible.
It can be accessed either by sea with boats that depart from Skala on a 45-minute trip or via the path from Diakofti that takes about half an hour.
Aspri, the isolated aristocrat
With fine pebbles and white sand, to which its name is attributed, Aspri has its own charm. A short distance from Skala, it is a small secluded bay of unique beauty that will “open” your heart and your eyes. There you will immediately feel carefree, as it exudes a sense of carefree and comforting freedom. Finally, what sets it apart is the exultation offered by the view of the Monastery of Patmos.
The unconditionally sweet Meloi
Meloi, or Melogi, is another treasure of the island. A relatively short distance from Skala, this picturesque cove has a lot to tell you. Something about the sandy beach with its tamarisk trees, something about its warm blue waters, something about the trees waiting to cool you down with their shade, it is no wonder it is named after the sweetness of the figs and melons in the area.
That is why, after all, it immediately seemed like the ideal location for creating a relaxing sanctuary like Blue Vista Patmos. Its stone-built villas, apartments and studios are a stone’s throw away from both the beautiful Aspri and the incomparable Meloi (and it has certainly got some of its own ‘sweetness’). Even if you do not drive, you can get to both of these dreamy beaches in dt time by going on foot. But all are very easily accessible from our complex, as it is carefully placed in a very convenient location. Whichever beach you want to explore, organized or not, it will take you very little time.
All this with Blue Vista as your base, with its unique aesthetics and welcoming atmosphere. The latter will be best appreciated when you are served by its friendly staff and will be fully realized when you get to know it better yourself. Showing a genuine concern for well-being and spiritual upliftment, Blue Vista will be the ideal port of call for a journey into your inner world, alongside the one you took on Patmos.
If you want to explore Meloi and every dream beach of the island from a complex designed to function as an integral part of the natural environment, we look forward to welcoming you at Blue Vista.
